Black River Nature Preserve
Over 2 miles of easy-to-difficult hiking trails through forest and wetland - including one mile of river frontage. Whether you are looking for a peaceful retreat to snowshoe or cross-country ski, a vibrant birding hotspot, a colorful show of spring flowers or fall foliage, or just a natural spot where the kids can run around, Black River Preserve is a great place to enjoy the outdoors. Leashed dogs are welcome to join owners on a hike!

Black River Park
Enjoy a day along the river! This park sports a really nice kayak launch, so you can easily get into your kayak and on the water without getting wet. It's also the perfect spot to jump onto the Bangor/South Haven Heritage Water Trail and travel up the river enjoying the natural sights. It's even handicapped accessible so everyone can have the chance to enjoy this serene park.

Casco Nature Preserve
Located just north of South Haven in Casco Township, this peaceful preserve features a short paved loop with wonderful meadow views, glimpses of native wildlife, and cliffside panoramas of Lake Michigan. Visitors in years past may remember beach access via a set of steep stairs, but after several years of high erosion there is no longer access to the beach. Even so, witnessing the persistent force of Lake Michigan from high above the crashing waves is a sight to behold! Visitors can presently enjoy vista views, wildlife, walks, picnics and natural beauty.

Deerlick Creek Park, though small, offers a picturesque landscape with a tree-lined parking area overlooking a beach and creek, and is popular for rock hunting along its rocky shoreline. Visitors often enjoy exploring the shoreline and following the creek into the river, adding to the park's charm and appeal as a repeatedly enjoyable destination.

Kal-Haven Trailhead
Enjoy a hike, bike ride, horseback ride, or a leisurely stroll on this 34-mile trail from South Haven to Kalamazoo. Travel through small towns, countryside, beautiful wooded areas, and pass points of historical interest. Towns along the way have food and lodging for trail users. Cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter.
Phoenix Kayak Launch
The Phoenix Kayak Launch is free to use, ADA-accessible, with kayak rentals and transportation services upon request via SoHa Surf Shop. Nestled on property donated by the South Haven Visitors Bureau in 2017 and partially funded by a Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant, this launch provides another convenient access point for both locals and visitors to enjoy paddling down the Black River.

Pilgrim Haven Natural Area
Pilgrim Haven Natural Area offers a beautiful sample of lakeshore habitats. A barrier-free concrete walk to the beach allows people of all abilities to reach the shore. One-third mile of easy trail through woods and meadows that leads to Lake Michigan overlooks and barrier-free paved access to the beach. Swimming. Wildlife Viewing. Hiking. Snowshoeing.

Sesquicentennial Trail
This collaborative project with the Historical Association of South Haven was conceived in 2019 to commemorate South Haven’s celebration of 150 years on May 10, 2019. Stroll the trail and take in the beautiful scenery of Stanley Johnston Park while you read about 150 years of South Haven’s rich history and view the incredible artwork by Kayla Wyszynski Ridley.

Van Buren Trailhead
The Van Buren Trail is a 14-mile, linear, multi-use trail that links the city of South Haven to Hartford. The trail runs through open farmland, blueberry fields, dense brush, and wooded areas. The first four miles south of South Haven is paved. As well as the 2.3 mile Van Buren Trail spur into the Van Buren State Park. Visitors in South Haven can use the South Haven city parking lot/trailhead at the corner of Kalamazoo and Huron Streets and follow the marked street route to the trail.
